Choose any concept you desire be it an English garden with roses and steel furniture. Or you can go for an exotic look that is made up of wicker furniture and interesting looking plants. Maybe you prefer the classic look with teak furniture, mini pond and well trimmed hedges.
Having a beautiful garden is like having a secret place to escape all the humdrum of everyday life. It gives you something to look forward to as well as place to alleviate the soul. On a side note, a beautiful garden is an added value to one's home and will increase its value. Therefore, a beautiful garden is a wise investment; be it spiritually or financially.
The result of hard work put into a garden can only be thoroughly enjoyed in a year or so. Therefore, hard work is not the only contributing factor to a beautiful garden; a lot of patience will also be needed. It is a good idea to a blueprint for you to effectively build your garden.
And unless you are well versed in all things green, do make it a point to be inspired by similar gardens elsewhere in order to be able to sift through the many choices of plants - potted and otherwise - for your own. If you could, have a ready gardener handy - for tips and references which you will undoubtedly need should you want your garden to end up looking like the way you envisage it to be when you first embarked on the project.
Be creative when in terms of plants and flowers. Go for the unusual or the usual with a slightly unusual twist. You might want to go for miniature palms to create that tinge of exotic. You can even go for small fruit trees to balance the flowers. Don't go overboard with the bigger plants or trees because it might make your backyard look more like a forest than a garden.
Do you have a tropical garden in mind? If you do, you should seriously consider getting some teak furniture for your garden. Teak is slightly expensive but its durability and beauty compensate for its high price. A teak pergola for instance is very pricey patio furniture however, if you are serious about the tropical look, you will eventually see that having it a worthy investment as it will not only transform the outlook of your garden, it is also mobile so that you can move the pergola whenever you feel like you need a create a different scene for your garden.
Using wood has its disadvantage in a sense that it is less pliant. It is what you bought and there is little that you can do to change it so that it fulfills your need. The plus point of wood is that there is not much debris to anticipate so it does not pose much of a threat to the whole outlook of your garden.
During this initial stage you could opt for patio umbrellas for protection from the hot sun; once the greens are nurtured and blossomed into a full grown protective foliage after which you could just sit in its shade, the former, which could look somewhat out-of-place, could be rid off. Unless, that is, you can afford a wooden umbrella, which would then be a fantastic addition to the garden; springing open as an when its services is needed for the odd drizzly day when some tender caring of the plants are in need to be done.
Should you go for outdoor heaters in your garden patio? If you must, do so, however, it is best that you let nature be the decisive factor in providing the necessary temperature changes required for the plants. The idea of having one must be for being able to enjoy your backyard no matter the season, but it does defeat the purpose of having a natural garden in the first place.
If you do plan to use outdoor heater, make sure that you include them during the planning stage so that it would not spoil the whole outlook or create any problems later.
Can it ever be complete? yes it would, but it will never be the end. That, I believe, is the simple unending joy of having one's own garden that it would grow with you; just like nurturing your children, but minus the tantrums - well, at a much lesser level, that is! - and watching them blossomed and mature as we age gracefully.
